PHOENIX, AZ – A young girl is in critical condition, and two men are hospitalized after police say a road rage incident turned violent late Thursday, October 28th, 2022 in north Phoenix.
Around 11 a.m., Phoenix police and firefighters responded to the intersection of 16th Street and Greenway Parkway, where aerial video shows multiple police SUVs near a Jeep Wrangler parked in the road. Another car in the area shows a bullethole on its back windshield.
According to Sgt. Brian Bower with Phoenix police, it began as a road rage incident involving the Jeep Wrangler and the black car. The 48-year-old Jeep driver followed the other car with three people inside, including the child. Both drivers ended up stopping at the intersection, and both men got out and began fighting in the intersection. During the fight, the 28-year-old second driver stabbed the other man before jumping back into his car. Police say he began to drive away, but the Jeep driver pulled out a gun and began shooting. The 8-year-old girl sitting in the backseat was hit.
The girl is currently hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The alleged shooter is also listed in critical condition with multiple stab wounds. The other man involved in the fight had minor injuries to his hand. A woman who was a passenger in the black car wasn’t hurt.
Bower says the driver of the Jeep instigated the road rage incident before the situation escalated. Detectives will be speaking with multiple witnesses who saw it unfold. “What it shows is um, everybody will get frustrated. Our suggestion is if you are found in a situation such as road rage just stop, park, call 911. Have the officers respond and let us try to deal with the different parties,” said Bower. The intersection will remain closed during the investigation. Our best wishes for a fast and full recovery for the injured.
