Dereck Ashe died after suspected impaired driver runs red light, causes multi-vehicle crash in Phoenix

PHOENIX, AZ –  A crash involving 5 cars left one person dead in Phoenix near 27th Avenue and Camelback Road on Friday, May 15th, 2021.

According to Phoenix police, a white Acura sedan was heading south on 27th Avenue and the driver didn’t stop for the red light at Camelback Road around 2 a.m. The driver crashed into a blue Chrysler sedan that was heading east. Three other cars that were stopped at the light on the south side of the intersection were also hit by the Acura after the initial crash.

Police say the man driving the Acura was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and is suspected of driving impaired. The passenger in that car, 46-year-old Dereck Ashe, died at the scene. The drivers of the other 4 vehicles were not injured.
